Pronunciation
[edit]I'm no expert in Spanish, but I do live in south Texas, and I'm around it all the time. I always thought Luis Tiant would be pronounced "loo-EES TEE-ahnt" - not the suggested pronunciation of "loo-IS tee-ANT". To me, this suggests saying it like you would say "Lewis" in English, and to put the emphasis on the "ant" in Tiant? It doesn't make sense to me, but then again, maybe he pronounced it like that. He was just before my time. Maybe someone could shed some light on this? JRed 03:08, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- I have a different problem with the Spanish pronunciation, which is now given as [ˈlwis ˈtjant]: surely most Spanish speakers do not pronounce final -nt, and would say either ˈtjan or ˈtjante. Languagehat (talk) 18:36, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
I am Cuban actually, and the name Luis its a very common name at Cuba, its like Jon or Mike at US, but the pronunciation of Luis in English its very different than Spanish, in Spanish you have to read the word as it is, I think the best approach in English wold be Lewis, in Cuban Spanish will be just straight "Luis", and the surname Tiant it is not common in Cuba, but maybe in Haiti, cause Cubans have many ancestors from Haiti and that is a possible lead to where this surname come, so pronunciation in Spanish of Tiant its as is, English should be like tee-ant all in minors. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.4.150.166 (talk) 02:32, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Lidle
[edit]Fact
* According to Elias Sports Bureau's Rob Tracy, only four pitchers have pitched four or more straight shutouts in the 40-year expansion era:
Cory Lidle (four, 2002) Orel Hershiser (five, 1988) Gaylord Perry (four, 1970) Luis Tiant (four, 1966)
I removed Lidle because it simply isn't true. He only had 2 shutouts in 2002. It is true that he had 4 straight starts where he allowed no runs, but those weren't shutouts since he only pitched 7-8 innings in some of them (and he wasn't credited with a CG due to rain delays and such) The "Fact" is simply wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.65.240.196 (talk) 01:29, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Oswalt
[edit]I removed Roy Oswalt from the section regarding consecutive shutouts. It had him as one of only 6 pitchers to have thrown 6 or more consecutive shutouts in 2007, this is not true. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lawnboy1977 (talk • contribs) 20:31, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Cigars
Louis has his own cigar brand called El Tiante Cigars. Website is http://www.eltiantecigars.com/aboutus.html, and president is his son Daniel.

Birth date
[edit]Tiant's birthday in the lede has a question mark, while the date in the infobox does not. I know that his actual age has always been a guessing game, but has the date here been confirmed? If not, should not the date in the infobox also have a question mark? Further, should there maybe be a sentence or two about how no one actually knows how old he is? 68.82.136.142 (talk) 04:00, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
